CONVICTIONS OVERTURNED
Second Degree Murder. A jury convicted my client of executing a rival drug dealer. On appeal, I challenged the jury selection procedure (which excluded people from low income ZIP Codes) and the effectiveness of the trial attorney (who failed to interview or call a single witness) and the admission of bad evidence. I convinced the Michigan Supreme Court that my client did not get a fair trial. The Supreme Court granted a new trial. Patrick Lewis
Attempted Murder. A jury convicted my client of shooting at another man in an attempt to kill him. On appeal, I successfully argued that the prosecution's main witness was not competent to testify. The Court of Appeals agreed and granted a new trial. Deangelo Early
Criminal Sexual Conduct. My client pled guilty to two counts of third degree criminal sexual conduct for having sex with 15-year-old girls. The judge sent him to prison. On appeal, I successfully argued that the judge and the attorneys failed to fully inform my client of the consequences of his plea. The Court of Appeals agreed and set aside the guilty pleas. SENTENCE REDUCTIONS/TIME CUTS
Five Year Reduction in Arson Case. The judge imposed a harsh sentence based on the fact that a person died in arson. On appeal, I successfully argued that the death of the victim was not sufficient reason to imposed such a harsh sentence. The Court of Appeals ordered the judge to reduce the sentence by 5 years. Four Year Reduction in Robbery/Sexual Assault Case. The judge imposed a harsh sentence based on the facts of the offense. I successfully argued that the trial judge abused her discretion. The Court of Appeals ordered the judge to reduce the sentence by 4 years. Jermaine Matthews
