Internet Crimes

The Internet is not a private place. Unfortunately, many people learn that difficult lesson when they are arrested for committing a crime via the Internet.
Commonly, such Internet crimes include possession or distribution of child pornography, solicitation of a minor or drug distribution.
Police and other investigators can trace a person's activity on the Internet, and use that information to build a criminal case. Even with the Internet, however, the police must respect a person's constitutional protections against unreasonable invasions of privacy. And, like in all criminal cases, the prosecutor must be able to actually prove the criminal charges.

You may find out that you are the subject of a police investigation when the police come to your house or workplace with a warrant to seize your computer. If so, be polite to the police and allow them to take whatever is listed on the warrant. However, you are not required to tell them anything — and you should not talk to the police without first talking to a lawyer.
Don't make excuses, or say it's not your computer, or even admit that it is your computer. The police can use anything you say as evidence against you in whatever case they are building.
If your property has been seized or you have been arrested for some kind of Internet crime, it is critically important that you talk to a defense lawyer before you talk to the police.
In my 15 years of criminal defense practice, I have handled several appeals of criminal cases involving Internet crimes. I have a thorough understanding of the difficult issues of proof that the prosecutor will face in trying to convict you, and I will use my knowledge to build a strong defense on your behalf.
